Life without glasses is great
“Pharmacy reading glasses are mass-produced. They have universal centration, the same dioptric power in both lenses, and they do not respect the individual needs of each person,” explains Bc. Anna Penkerová, DiS., Head Optometrist at Eye Centre Prague. “The difference between a quick fix and truly precise correction is crucial for both comfort and long-term eye health.”
Ready-made reading glasses can be very useful in situations where we need to read something immediately — for example, checking a price in a shop, reading a message, or orienting ourselves in documents. In such cases, they can be a convenient helper kept in a handbag, car, or on a desk.
However, this type of glasses works best when the need is mild and both eyes have a similar prescription. As soon as we spend more time reading or working at close range, the limits of universal correction become noticeable. “They are suitable as a quick help, not for long-term use,” summarises Penkerová. With prolonged wear, some people may quickly develop a feeling of eye strain or tension.
Each eye sees slightly differently — sometimes the differences are minimal, sometimes more pronounced. This is where the problem with long-term reliance on ready-made pharmacy glasses becomes apparent. They do not account for differences in prescription between the two eyes, nor do they correct astigmatism.
As a result, users may experience eye strain, blurred vision, or a need to concentrate more intensely. “If the prescription does not match the actual needs of the eyes, they can become overloaded,” the optometrist explains. “They may burn, become tired, or headaches may occur.” In such asymmetry, one eye often takes over more of the work, reducing comfort during prolonged visual tasks.
Optical practices offer the possibility to adapt vision correction to the true needs of each individual. Eye measurements determine not only the correct prescription but also precise centration, pupillary distance and other parameters that influence visual quality. As a result, the image is stable and the eyes work in balance, significantly reducing fatigue.
Custom-made glasses can also correct subtle deviations that people may not consciously notice but that have a major impact on near work. “In an optical practice, you receive glasses that are based on precise measurements, made to order, and suitable for long-term everyday use,” adds Penkerová. The investment in custom glasses is therefore often reflected in greater comfort, better concentration and higher visual endurance.
Pharmacy glasses address only the immediate need, not the overall condition of the eyes — and this is their greatest limitation. After the age of forty, the risk of eye diseases increases, many of which may go unnoticed at first, such as changes in the retina or at the back of the eye. Without regular check-ups, these problems can remain undetected for years.
“By buying glasses in a pharmacy, you skip an eye examination, which is essential at this stage of life,” the optometrist reminds us. A professional examination reveals not only the correct prescription but also intraocular pressure and the general condition of the eye. It is therefore a form of prevention that plays a key role in maintaining healthy vision in the long term.
While pharmacies offer at least basic quality and a stated dioptric power, online marketplaces represent a much greater risk. Glasses from unverified sellers may have inaccurate optics, lack quality control and sometimes do not even correspond to the values stated on the packaging. The result may be image distortion or unpleasant eye strain.
“With unverified sellers, you have no certainty regarding correct correction, lens quality or material safety,” warns Penkerová. Inaccuracies can appear within minutes of wear and instead of relief bring further burden. This is why people should choose at least verified sellers if they decide to buy outside an optical practice — and should not base their choice solely on price or delivery speed.
Quick solutions have their place in eye care. Ready-made glasses can be a helpful companion in unexpected situations when near vision is needed. However, they cannot replace precise correction or professional examination that reveals the true condition of the eyes.
Vision deserves the same care as any other aspect of our health — and good decisions today are the foundation of long-term well-being. Therefore, leave the choice of glasses to a professional and use pharmacy glasses only in emergency situations.
