TREATMENT OF AMD
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of severe vision loss in older people. Especially its „wet“ form advances very quickly and it can destroy your vision within a couple of weeks or months. You can stop the vision loss with early detection of this disease and with help of modern medicine. This disease is one of the most serious diseases of the retina and it is the most common cause of legal blindness in developed countries.
Signs of the age-related macular degeneration
At first the AMD shows inconspicuous – worsened vision in the dark, slightly blurry vision, colours are not that bright as used to be. Especially with those people who already wear glasses, the danger of omission the first sign is high, because they think it is “normal” vision impairment. The age-related macular degeneration often affects just one eye at first, which also reduces the possibility of subjective recognition of its symptoms. Those patients with AMD, who come with an advanced stage of the disease, often lose their sight. The other eye is affected in the following years with the level of risk increasing by 10% every year. The second eye is therefore affected after five years in a half of patients and after ten years the impairment is definitely bilateral.
The first subjectively observable symptoms of AMD are hazy vision, greyish spots in the central macula, unusually blurred image or contorted lines and letters. From the very beginning of the disease patients lose their reading ability, cannot recognize familiar faces a colours and all shapes are seen distorted.
