Who is laser eye surgery suitable for
Laser eye surgery is suitable for correcting vision defects such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It is particularly recommended for younger patients aged 18 to 45.
"It is always essential to remember that the suitability for laser surgery is individual and can only be recommended based on a comprehensive pre-operative examination," explains MUDr. Andrea Janeková, FEBO, FEBOS-CR, who performs ReLEx SMILE laser surgeries at the Eye Centre Prague. |
Laser surgery ReLEx SMILE
At the Eye Centre Prague, we offer the most advanced laser vision correction method, known as ReLEx SMILE.
This is the gentlest type of laser eye surgery. The entire procedure is performed using a femtosecond laser, which separates a thin layer of tissue directly within the cornea based on precise calculations, without compromising the strength and stability of the cornea (which remains intact). The correction of diopters involves adjusting the curvature of the cornea so that light rays are accurately projected onto the retina, producing a sharp image of the observed object.
The ReLEx SMILE method is the MOST MODERN, GENTLEST, and MOST PRECISE method of vision correction.
The surgery is painless, recovery is quick, and the healing time is short.
5 advantages of laser surgery
-
Freedom from glasses: Laser surgery will change your life! No more limitations when playing sports, swimming, or wearing sunglasses. Life without glasses and contact lenses is truly freedom—during any activities, every day, week, month, and for years!
-
Healthier eyes: Laser surgery will free you from nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. After the surgery, your vision will return to excellent condition, and your eyesight will be sharp. You will no longer face the risk of infections from wearing contact lenses or the danger of broken glasses while playing sports.
-
Financial savings: The investment in laser surgery will pay off for patients! Although it is a one-time higher investment, it will save you much higher costs for new glasses and contact lenses over the years. The earlier you undergo the surgery, the more you will save.
-
Time savings: Laser surgery will also save you time! Imagine waking up in the morning and seeing everything clearly in all its details—without putting on glasses or taking the time to apply contact lenses.
-
No restrictions: With laser surgery, you will see the results just a few hours after the procedure, and your vision will stabilize within 24 hours. The healing and recovery time is very short, allowing you to return almost immediately to your regular life.

Examination before laser surgery
If you are considering laser correction of refractive errors, it is essential to undergo a comprehensive initial examination. Only based on this examination can the doctor assess your eye condition and recommend the suitability of performing laser surgery.
The initial pre-operative examination is very detailed and lasts 2-3 hours. It includes gathering your medical history, an examination by the doctor, and the use of specialized diagnostic equipment. During the examination, you will also undergo dilation of the eyes (cycloplegia), where drops will be applied to your eyes to eliminate accommodation effort, allowing for the detection of any hidden eye defects. At the end of the examination, you will have a consultation with the doctor, who will explain in detail how the procedure works and what to expect. Don't hesitate to ask any questions!
Patients should avoid wearing contact lenses for at least 5 days before the initial examination.
How laser surgeries are conducted at the Eye Centre Prague
Laser surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will leave on the same day as the procedure.
On the day of the surgery, you will spend approximately two hours at the clinic. Upon arrival, our receptionists will assist you with all the necessary formalities. You will then meet with the surgeon, and a nurse will take you to the pre-operative area, where anesthetic drops will be applied to your eyes to ensure a painless experience. After that, you will proceed to the operating room, where you will spend about 20 minutes, although the actual surgery lasts only 30-50 seconds. The procedure is bilateral, and your eyes will not be covered afterward. It is advisable to protect your eyes with sunglasses on your way home from the clinic.
Post-operative check-up
The first day after the surgery, a follow-up appointment is required at the Eye Centre Prague.
Subsequent check-ups will take place at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after the surgery.
Post-operative recommendations
In the first few days after the surgery, you will need to apply antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops to the operated eye. You will also use moisturizing eye drops for several weeks. Most patients can resume normal work activities by the 2nd to 5th day after the surgery.
- Attend follow-up appointments as scheduled.
- Avoid rubbing the eye during the post-operative period; do not strain your eyes and rest as needed.
- Stay away from dusty and smoky environments.
- Do not use eye creams or makeup for one week.
- For one month, avoid contact sports, swimming in pools and natural bodies of water, and visits to saunas and tanning beds.
- Use artificial tears regularly for long-term comfort.
