Vitreoretinal Centre

Centre for the treatment of retinal diseases

Retinal diseases belong to the most serious eye disorders that can lead to irreversible eye damage.  The reason for this is that a number of diseases of the retina are hidden in its beginning, do not show any symptoms and in the advanced stage the vision becomes so deteriorated that it cannot be corrected, only stopped getting worse. Immediate diagnosis and immediate initiation of the treatment are thus crucial.

At the Eye Centre Prague, we opened a new specialized Centre for the treatment of retinal diseases, the so-called Vitreoretinal Centre, where patients receive complex care from a diagnosis to the subsequent conservative or surgical treatment.

“At present, very few workplaces deal with the complex retinal therapy and patients have to wait for up to half a year to book an appointment there.  Unfortunately, in the case of retinal disorders, the diagnosis and timely initiation of the treatment are essential as the eye damage can be irreversible.  In our centre for patients suffering from retinal diseases we offer them an early appointment as well as the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic devices”, says Adam Janek, the director of the Eye Centre Prague.

Retinal diseases

The retina is the most important part of the eye that captures the image penetrating into the eye and the visual nerve sends it to the brain.  The central part of the retina is the so-called macula or yellow spot which is the place of the sharpest vision.  The retinal nutrition is provided by retinal arteries and vessels.  Retinal disorders are always very serious and often irreversible and can lead to loss of vision.

What retinal diseases can be discovered in time in our centre?

  • eye cancer - oncology diseases
  • age-related macular degeneration
  • vascular diseases of the retina (diabetic retinopathy)
  • macular diseases
  • disorders relating to the blood supply to the retina
  • necrosis of blood vessels in the eye
  • all degenerative changes in the retina
  • retinal detachment

Examination using OCT Angiography

At the Eye Centre Prague, we use the revolutionary retinal imaging method, the so-called OCT ANGIOGRAPHY.  OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) ANGIOGRAPHY compared to the standard OCT is a technique for imaging not only the condition of the individual layers of the retina but also the FUNCTION of these individual layers.

OCT ANGIOGRAPHY can detect many eye diseases in their early stage when there are no symptoms of the disease yet.  It is thus possible to start the treatment in time in order to prevent irreversible eye damage.

Which patients shall undergo OCT ANGIOGRAPHY and when?

  • Everyone aged 35 and more. OCT ANGIOGRAPHY is a technique that can reveal many eye disorders at their early stages when symptoms are not noticeable yet.
  • OCT ANGIOGRAPHY is a very fast, safe and painless technique without intravenous contrast medium administration.  The whole treatment including the consultation of the results with the doctor takes about 30 minutes.

Treatment of retinal diseases

At the Eye Centre Prague, we offer our patients the conservative and surgical treatment of retinal diseases.

Conservative treatment - based on the results of the diagnostic examinations the ophthalmologist decides whether the conservative treatment is possible or more invasive treatment is needed.

Painless laser surgery - we use the latest retinal laser, the so-called yellow laser that is much friendlier to the eye than the standard green laser and can also be used to treat those diseases that are for other types of lasers too risky.  The yellow laser procedure is highly personalized with the option of setting the laser template for the most accurate performance.  In the Czech Republic, this type of laser is unique due to its high purchase price.

Administration of anti-VEGF preparation (intraocular injections) – the treatment is intended for the age-related macular degeneration (VPMD).  The injections are administered on the outpatient basis after putting analgesic drops into the eye.  The treatment is painless and takes only several minutes.
