Presbyopia treatment - PRELEX

Without glasses after the age of forty

Approximately after the age of forty, the human eye begins to lose its ability to accommodate or to focus on near distance and we gradually begin to see worse letters, when we read, which is manifested by small letters appearing as blurry in the text. This process is called presbyopia.

At the beginning, the problem can be solved by moving the text further but over time it is not possible to read without glasses anymore. And if a person must wear distance glasses, it is necessary for him or her to change the glasses permanently, or this problem can be solved by glasses with multi-focal glass which are very expensive, and some people are even not able to get used to them.

If wearing glasses is bothering and limiting you in your normal life, we have a solution for your - the imperfect accommodation can be solved by an intraocular eye surgery – PRELEX.

PRELEX Surgery

In the course of the PRELEX surgery the human lens is replaced by a new multi-focal or tri-focal intraocular lens. The surgery makes it possible to remove any number of dioptres and thanks to this you will no longer need reading glasses, and you will even not need distance glasses. The surgery is simultaneously a preventive medical treatment because after this surgery the patients will not suffer from cataract and paroxysmal glaucoma.

The PRELEX surgery is highly safe and fast. It is an outpatient surgery which takes about 15 minutes. It is completely painless because the eye is anaesthetised by drops. After the surgery, the eye is covered by a plaster until the next day; after the plaster is removed the patient is able to see normally and without glasses.

The surgery of the other eye can be usually performed after 2 weeks.

Which patients shall undergo the surgery?

The PRELEX method cannot be recommended to everyone. It is suitable to undergo the surgery at the age of more than 45, when the sight has become significantly weaker, not only for near but also for long distance.

Quality and accuracy of vision

To become independent on glasses, multi-focal or tri-focal lenses are chosen.

On long-term basis we cooperate with Lenstec, an American producer of intraocular lenses which produces intraocular lenses from materials of the highest quality, which have been verified on the long-term basis. The Lenstec intraocular lenses have, as the only ones worldwide, a 0.25 increments of power and for this reason, they allow the patient to have better vision of higher quality.

The doctors of the Eye Centre Prague even participated in the development of the new multi-focal lenses SBL-3 DUAL OPTIC, which are being implanted worldwide.

Why to invest into the vision

Unfortunately, neither presbyopia nor multi-focal lenses, which are implanted in the course of the surgery, are paid by the public health insurance.

The reasons why it is worth investing into the vision:

  • The eyes are one of our most important organs in which we should invest the money,
  • The patients who decided to invest money into their vision are enthusiastic after the surgery because they can see as when they were young, and they enjoy freedom without glasses,
  • It is worth getting rid of glasses forever,
  • At the middle and higher age, we should not abandon our interests and hobbies just for the reasons that our vision or glasses do not allow us to enjoy them,
  • After the surgery, it is not necessary for the patient to spend money for glasses which he or she would have to change often and even twice - for reading and distance glasses,

We are well aware of the fact that not everyone can afford such an investment, and therefore we offer the option of instalments with no interest.

PRELEX surgery

Pre-operative examination

The pre-operative examination takes about 1.5 hours. During the examination, we will find out your anamnesis, ongoing condition, dioptric defects, intraocular pressure, as well as examination of eyes and eye background by “dilation of the pupil using eye drops”. At the end of the examination the doctor shall explain the course of the surgery in detail and recommend you the most suitable surgery method and the type of intraocular lenses. Please, bring your glasses for the examination, as well as the list of medicines you take. You do not need a recommendation from your ophthalmologist. After the examination, you will not be able to drive for several hours.

The surgery

The surgery is performed in an outpatient basis, meaning you will leave the clinic on the day of the surgery. The surgery takes about 15 minutes and it is completely painless because the eye is anaesthetised by drops. The eyelid will be held by a special fixator in the right position. The fixator avoids blinking, so you do not need to be afraid of endangering the surgery by blinking. During the entire period of preparation as well as during the surgery itself, the nursing staff will do their best for you to feel safe and comfortable.

In the course of the surgery, the surgeon will make just a small cut (only 2.2 mm) and he or she  injects a surgery gel into your eye. The gel is to protect the eye structure from damage during the entire surgery. By a special instrument - an ultra-sound phaco-emulsifier – he or she crushes the human lens and removes it by suction. After the removal of the lens, an artificial lens is implanted into the eye. Due to really small size of the wound, the eye heals up very quickly, easily and by itself. After the surgery, the patient has the eye covered by a sterile plaster until the next day. After the plaster is removed, the patient can see normally.

The surgery of the other eye is usually performed within 2 weeks.

Post-operative examination

After the surgery, you book an appointment for the post-operative examination within three days after the surgery.
